Administer and oversee the City Municipal parks and recreation program and to support and promote recreation and parks activities for all residents of the City. Responsible for grass cutting and shrub maintenance in all parks.

Veterans Memorial Swimming Pool: The City of Watervliet operates and maintains a municipal swimming pool that is open to residents of the City six days a week (weather permitting) during the summer months. Resident ID cards are required ($5.00/adults, $3.00/children, senior citizens/free) ID cards are issued M-F from 12-5 at the Dome (corner of 2nd Avenue and 13th Street) beginning in June.

Swimming lessons are offered free of charge to all children who reside in the city. They are offered in the morning and dates and times are determined each summer.

Parks and Playgrounds

Seventh Street Park: This park is located in the area of 7th Street and 2nd Avenue in the Port Schuyler section of the City. Park amenities include a basketball court, swings and playground apparatus, and a spray/wading pool for younger children that is operated in the summer months.

Mayor Hugh F. Donnelly Erie Canal Side-Cut Park: The northern tip of Seventh Street Park was recently renovated and renamed the Mayor Hugh F. Donnelly Erie Canal Side-Cut Park.

Reds Field: This park is located at 8th Street and 3rd Avenue in the Port Schuyler section of the City. Park amenities include a baseball/softball field and a basketball court.

Clinton Park: This park is located at Clinton Street and Avenue A. Park amenities include basketball courts, swings and playground apparatus and a neighborhood spray/wading pool for younger children that is operated during the summer months.

15th Street Park: This park is located on the corner of 15th Street and 2nd Avenue. Park amenities include a bocce ball court, and swings and playground apparatus.

Brotherhood Park: This park is the home of the Watervliet Little League. It is located at 25th Street and 6th Avenue. The playground amenities include basketball courts, swings and playground apparatus and a heighborhood spray/wading pool for younger children that is operated during the summer months.

The Dome is located at the corner of 2nd Avenue and 13th Street. This is an indoor facility that provides a year round location for recreational activities. This facility is rented out to athletic/community organizations, based on availability, as long as the organization has proof of insurance. Call 518-270-3815 for more information.

Mayor James Cavanaugh Hudson Shores Park is located along the Hudson River adjacent to I-787. The park pavillion can be reserved during the summer months for a fee of $200 for residents and $250 for non-residents (call 518-270-3815 for availability). Other park amenities include a river walk, boathouse and portable dock. Park hours are 9:00 am - 9:00 pm.

Bicycle Trails

The 4th Street parking area in Watervliet is the northern terminus of the Hudson River Bike Path that runs from the Corning Preserve in Albany to Watervliet. This section of the regional bike path system connects with sections through the City of Cohoes, along the Mohawk River in the Town of Colonie and westward to the Town of Niskayuna.

Special Events

The City of Watervliet and the Combined Veterans Association of Watervliet sponsor an annual Memorial Day Parade held on the day of the Monday holiday. The parade kicks off at 10:00 am and proceeds from the Watervliet High School parking lot to 19th Street, east to 2nd Avenue, then south to 16th Street and ends at the Veteran's Memorial Park where a memorial service takes place honoring all veterans. Any person or group wishing to participate should contact the Parks and Recreation Department at 518-270-3815.

The Arsenal City Run is a 5K that began in 1982 and has drawn runners from all areas of the region. In addition to the 5K, there is a one mile fun run. The post-race festivities take place at the Dome and include food vendors, complimentary beer, face painting, bouncy bounce, live music and awards. Proceeds from the race support the City of Watervliet Holiday Adopt-A-Family Program. More information can be obtained by calling 270-3815.

The City of Watervliet annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony is the first Saturday of December at Veteran's Memorial Park located at 16th Street and 2nd Avenue. Features include Christmas caroling, horse drawn carriage rides, refreshments and a souvenir tree ornament given to each family. Santa will also be paying a visit for the children's enjoyment.

The City of Watervliet Heroes Banner Program is a tribute to those who are or have served in a branch of the U.S. Armed Forces and who were born, lived in or currently reside in the City of Watervliet.

Families and friends can purchase a banner for $175. The banner will feature the serviceman’s/ woman’s picture along with his/her name and branch of service. The person must be in uniform and there cannot be additional people in the photo. Banners shall be displayed for as long as the integrity of the banner lasts (lifespan is approximately three to four years). It will then be the sponsor’s responsibility to replace the banner. Replacement banners cost $135.
